Flying LVII 1966, 1976 and 1986 29/3 -09 Program 1

Tonight’s show started with the best of the best. ”Pet Sounds”. The album Beach Boys released in 1966. This album has been said being one of the best albums ever made in rock history. Brian Wilson who wrote the songs competed with Lennon/McCartney in the sixties to be the best songwriter in the world regarding pop and rock songs. Beach Boys played two songs from this album tonight, but also two songs from their album ”15 Big Ones” released ten years later, in 1976.

The first single Beatles released in 1966 was Paperback Writer. A smash hit, of course. Tonight they also played the flip side, Rain, which happens to be Ringo’s favourite song from The Beatles song catalogue.

George Harrison released an album in 1976 called ”33 & 1/3”. From that album I played Learning How To Love You, a sweet ballad.

Ringo came out with an album called ”Ringo’s  Rotogravure” in 1976. He got some help to write songs to that album. One of his friends, Eric Clapton wrote one which Ringo sang tonight. He also did a song making us listerners dreaming of The West Indies. That song was called Las Brisas.

John Lennon released two albums in 1986. Well, that’s not quite true as he was dead then. His wife, Yoko Ono, released them with songs recorded in the early seventies, not being released before. One was a live album from New York, and one was left-over from the Rock’n’Roll recordings with Phil Spector. I played one from each of those albums tonight.

Paul McCartney and his group Wings released the album At The Speed Of Sound in 1976. From that album I gave you three songs. One of them written and sung by Denny Laine, the only member of the group staying from start to the end besides Paul and Linda McCartney.

In 1976 10cc released their fourth album ”How Dare You”, which happened to be the last one with the originary members, Eric Stewart, Lol Creme, Graham Gouldman and Kevin Godley. They played one song from that album tonight.

Eric Stewart from 10cc started his recording carrier in The Mindbenders in the sixties. Tonight they delivered two songs. And Eric Stewart sang one song from his new album ”Viva La Difference”.

Graham Gouldman, the other member of 10cc who stayed after the break in 1976, created another group in the mid-eighties called Wax together with Andrew Gold from US. They played two songs from thier album ”Magnetic Heaven” tonight.

Queen came out with the album ”A Day At The Races” in 1976. They played two songs from that album.

ABBA came out with the album ”Arrival” in 1976. From that album I played Tiger.

Björn Ulvaeus, one of the male members of ABBA started his recording carrier in a folk song group called Hootenanny Singers. They sang in Swedish. And tonight they played two songs from 1966. Both about girls. Gabrielle and Marianne.

Benny Andersson, the other male member of ABBA started his recording carrier in the Swedish very popular group The Hep Stars in the sixties. They played three songs tonight from 1966. One which was written by Benny was called Sunny Girl. That was only the second song he ever wrote.

No songs from Pink Floyd was played tonight. But next Sunday I will play tracks from the solo album ”Broken China” by Rick Wright, the keyboard player in Pink Floyd. That album was released in 1996. And David Gilmour from the album ”On An Island”, released in 2006.

They had sampled tracks from earlier 10cc songs and put them together in a mix called ”Wet Rubber Soup” which they played. And another song which was a big hit for them called ”Cry” was heard tonight.

Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys started his solo carrier at the end of the eighties. In 1995 he did an album with songs written by Van Dyke Parks called ”Orange Crate Art”. He did the title track tonight. Brian Wilson had co-operated earlier with Mr Parks for the songs to the album ”Smile”, recorded in 1966, but not released until 2004.
